It is so nice to see these pictures especially those of Farqhuar MacRae and the scenes with the local community. Farqhuar MacRae was my Grandmother Catherine MacRae’s Uncle . We grew up with stories about the rebuilding of the castle and of the amazing character of Farqhuar . Thanks for posting these . Elspeth
I’ve just looked at my great grandfathers marriage certificate in 1855, this took place in Rogart, Sutherland and I am still in Sutherland all these years later.
He was born in Kintail in 1825 and his name was Donald MacRae, his occupation was listed as gamekeeper. His parents were Duncan MacRae and Isabella Maclennan. They were both alive in 1855 and Duncan is listed as a farmer.
My late father told me that we were Torlysich MacRaes and were descended from Farqhar MacRae brother of Duncan who killed Donald Gorm at the castle in 1539. I believe that the said Farqhar was founder of the black MacRaes.
