Where to start…..?   2 comments

When John MacRae-Gilstrap first set about the reconstruction of Eilean Donan he was faced with quite a daunting task. I’ve just managed to get my hands on a decent quality photograph from 1908 which gives a good idea of what he was faced with. Not much wonder it took the best part of 20 years to complete.

The really crazy thing about the whole reconstruction was that they didn’t add the bridge until AFTER the castle itself was complete, as the next photo depicts.

  1. One wonders how the Monk Donan lived for many years?……….A credit to the MacRaes persistence, after the Clans MacKenzie and MacRae’s History with the Island Donan.

    William Robert MacKenzie.
  2. When you see the castle as it was then and how it looks now it serves to remind me just how resilient, hard working and determined we Scots are to restore our heritage to it’s former glory. No matter how long it takes.
